Business Requirement
Traditional multi-function travel adapters were a common complaint among the customer's end users: large, heavy, often without an earth connection, awkward to carry and prone to falling out of the wall socket. The brief was a slim multi-function travel adapter for the UK market that is easy to carry, includes a proper earth path and stays securely in the socket.
Engineering / Product Challenge
Three goals pulled against each other. Adding a true earth path takes space inside the body; making the product slimmer leaves less room for it; and a heavy or deep product tends to lever itself out of a UK socket. The design had to bring the weight closer to the wall and keep the earth connection reliable while shrinking the overall size.
How the Project Ran
After several rounds of discussion to fix the specification, the design went through six rounds of samples. Each round was tested for:
- Electrical safety, including the earth connection
- Temperature-rise testing under load
- Plug insertion and withdrawal force
- Wall stability and resistance to falling out
From the start of development to a production-ready design took 50 days.
Compliance for the UK Market
UK market requirements were covered as part of the project: CE, UKCA and RoHS, together with the related test reports.
Result
The slim, grounded adapter went into production and has been well received in its market. It addressed the three complaints end users had raised — size, missing earth and falling out of the socket — in a single product.
