A grounded travel adapter provides a continuous protective-earth path from the connected appliance through the adapter to a compatible grounded wall socket. A third pin by itself does not automatically mean that the adapter is truly grounded.

| Feature | Grounded Adapter | Non-Grounded Adapter |
|---|---|---|
| Protective earth continuity | Yes, when used with compatible grounded systems | No |
| Third pin | May be conductive and part of the earth path | May be absent or non-conductive |
| Suitable for Class I devices | Potentially, subject to full system compatibility | Generally not where protective earth is required |
| Design complexity | Higher | Lower |
| Buyer verification | Continuity, plug system, mechanical reliability | Confirm that grounding is not claimed |
UK Type G sockets use a three-pin arrangement and commonly incorporate internal shutters. The earth pin is longer and is mechanically involved in opening the socket shutters before the live and neutral pins engage.
For a grounded travel adapter, the earth connection must do more than open the shutter. It should form a reliable conductive path through the adapter when the product is designed to support protective earth.
The UK earth pin can interact with the socket shutter mechanism and helps ensure the live and neutral contacts are not exposed before insertion.
In a truly grounded product, the earth contact should also connect electrically through the adapter to the appliance earth contact.
Some travel adapters use a third pin primarily for mechanical compatibility. Buyers should not assume that a visible earth pin automatically provides protective-earth continuity.
Protective earth only works when the entire chain is compatible: the appliance, adapter output contact, internal grounding path, destination plug earth pin and wall socket must all support the same protective-earth function.
This means a grounded travel adapter can still lose grounding if it is used in a destination plug mode or wall socket that does not provide earth continuity.
LONGRICH POWER uses the NT009-UK platform as a compact 20W travel adapter direction for UK/HK applications where true grounding is a key product requirement. The platform is positioned around compact form factor, integrated multi-country plugs and a real grounding design direction rather than a decorative third pin.
Grounding and voltage conversion are separate functions. A grounded travel adapter may provide protective-earth continuity but still does not normally convert voltage.
It means the adapter provides a continuous protective-earth path between a compatible appliance and a compatible grounded wall socket.
No. A third pin may be mechanical only. Buyers should verify actual electrical earth continuity through the adapter.
The longer earth pin is part of the Type G safety design and typically interacts with internal socket shutters before live and neutral contacts engage.
Many phone and laptop chargers are double-insulated and do not require protective earth, but requirements depend on the specific power supply and equipment design.
No. Grounding provides a protective-earth path. Voltage conversion is a separate electrical function.
Yes. Grounded structures can be evaluated according to the destination plug system, target equipment, product architecture and compliance requirements.
